So Buzzfeed has a books editor now...
And he won't be allowing negative reviews.
"BuzzFeed will do book reviews, Fitzgerald said, but he hasn’t figured out yet what form they’ll take. It won’t do negative reviews: “Why waste breath talking smack about something?” he said. “You see it in so many old media-type places, the scathing takedown rip.” Fitzgerald said people in the online books community “understand that about books, that it is something that people have worked incredibly hard on, and they respect that. The overwhelming online books community is a positive place.”"
Bold added by me for emphasis.
Hi there, Mr Fitzgerald. Welcome to the internet. Please have a seat.
I'm annoyed and baffled by people who think that a) the book blogosphere is a happy happy backslapping place devoid of any form of criticism, and b) that such criticism is a bad thing. It's ridiculous. Readers are entitled to not like a book, they're entitled to anger and snark and take-downs. I'm not here for nothing but neutered hand holding, especially when being "nice" is used as a shield to be incredibly horrid to other people under the guise of politeness.
I wish I knew jack shit about how to make my own website because I would so make a Buzzfeed style site for books where criticism was welcome.
