True Grit

True Grit - Charles Portis I love Mattie Ross so much. She might be one of my favourite narrators of all time. Her no nonsense bravery and occasional bouts of righteous indignation are equal parts hilarious and heartwarming, as is the relationship she builds with Rooster and Laboeuf. She's just a kid but she's stronger, wittier and more determined than every other character in the story. The story isn't quite as strong and there are a lot of points where Mattie just lists stuff she's done but it just adds to the effect of having someone read you a story of a different time and place, one that no longer exists. I eagerly await the Coen Brothers movies although I hope that they remember the story is Mattie's and don't do what the John Wayne movie did.
